I’m often asked where to find Latte in Paris, and ten years ago it wasn’t possible.
As an Aussie (Australian), I’m always looking for good strong Italian coffee, but when I lived in Paris, that type of coffee could not be found. In my experience way back then, ordering coffee in a café was interesting:
- the coffee was based on chickory – not coffee beans
- the milk was not fresh, it was UHT which did not need to be refrigerated
- the classic French coffee tasted quite bitter.
I did get used to it, but back then it definitely couldn’t replace the “double-shot latte, thick and creamy – made with love!”, which I enjoy today :-)
A bit of history – in the early 19th century, Napoleon Bonaparte (ruler of France for a while), banned all imports. This historic event was known as the Napoleonic Blockade. The French resorted to chicory because no coffee imports were allowed.
These day Paris now has a great list of cafés which serve Italian coffee – including those made with fresh milk, soy milk and alternatives. Not every cafe will have soy milk, but some research online will find a few dotted throughout the city.
Where to find great Italian coffee in Paris?
About ten years ago, there was a real shake up thanks to a robust specialty coffee movement which turned Paris into a coffee lover’s dream.
With local roasters and barista-led shops in nearly every arrondissement (suburb, district), Paris now rivals all the best European destinations for great coffee which includes espressos, pour-overs, flat whites, and crèmes – and sometimes even latte!
