There’s no doubt that I love Paris but there are plenty more than 10 day trips outside Paris that you really should add to your list.
Yes, I could happily bask in that Parisian glow forever, but there is so much more to see.
I’ve listed just 10 day trips to whet your whistle … each one is less than an hour away.
1. Versaille Day Trip Outside Paris
Everyone’s heard of Versailles (haven’t they?) – the Palace (le chateau) which includes the Grand Trianon and Domain of Marie-Antoinette. close by is King Louis XIV’s (the 14th) vegetable garden called Potager du Roi, established way back in 1678 and amazingly still producing delicious veggies.
Travel time: around 40 minutes from Paris, take the train line RER C to Chateau de Versailles – http://www.ChateauVersailles.fr
2. Chevreuse Valley
Would you like to visit little villages in a huge national park with many bushwalking tracks? Or maybe you’d rather a day of cafe and restaurant hopping to sample the local produce – a real treat for foodies. How about a visit to a family-run farm which specialises in tastings of their cheeses, pates, honey, cider etc? You’ll need to leave Paris early and come home late – there’s so much to experience here.
Travel time: around 40 minutes from Paris, take the train line RER B to St-Remy-les-Chevreuse – http://www.parc-naturel-chevreux.fr
3. Marly le Roi
Louis XIV built a private weekender in Marly le Roi, and he had great taste. This is a great town to excape to – breathe in the fresh air, visit the local Chateau (castle), check out the fabulous restaurants.
Travel time: around 40 minutes from Paris, take the train from Metro Gare St Lazare (or La Defense) in the direction of St Nom le Breteche, hop off at Marly-le-Roi. For the return trip, take the bus to St-Germain-en-Laye for a few hours then catch the train back to Paris. – http://www.marlyleroi.fr
