What’s on in Paris in July?
Ongoing : Foire St-Gerain, Paris Jazz Festival, Festival Chopin a Paris, Paris Cinema, La Goutte d’Or en Fete
14 July : Quatorze Juillet
Foreigners [like me] call this day Bastille Day, but the French call it Quatorze Juillet [Quatorze means 14th and Juillet means July], and it commemorates the storming of the Bastille in 1789. On the 13th, all the Parisians dance in the Place de la Bastille, where the Bastille Monument is. The next day – the 14th – jets fly over, helicopters hover, processions march, and parties go on until the wee hours. If you’re in town, join in the festivities!
Arrivée du Tour de France (cyclisme/cycling)
I’ve been watching the Tour de France on tv the past few years and it is soooo exciting! A few tumbles and spills, tears have been shed, but the amazing strength and perseverence of all who participate never ceases to amaze me. The race finishes at the Champs-Elysees.
Metro: Champs-Elysées/Musée du Louvre (PARIS 08)
Mid July – mid August : Paris Plages : Paris Beaches!
Now this really has to be seen to be believed. The French sure know how to build a beach each year by bringing 2,000 tonnes of sand and putting it on both sides of the River Seine. They then decorate the banks of the Seine with palm trees, hammocks and huts, and you can sit out under the sun AT THE BEACH in Paris! What a great idea :-) Oh – I almost forgot – there’s also a floating pool, and you can borrow books to read while you enjoy your visit to the beach. Solidays International Youth, Music and Solidarity Festival
This exceptional event is not only a great music festival with a number of major performing artists, but is also for a good cause. Solidays celebrates the summer by fighting against AIDS through increasing awareness, with around 100 French and international associations exchanging information and ideas.
3 day music fest.
