Interested in history and French archives?
Historic mansions in the Marais district (75003) of Paris house the wonderful French archives – these buildings are known as “hotels particuliers” (translates to “historic mansions”).
It’s free to visit the French Archives and you’ll be able to see :
- the original Declaration on the Rights of Man and of the Citizen dating from 1789
- letters from Louis XVI
- a papyrus dated AD625 which was issued by King Chlotar II.
Locations:
- Rue des Archives or Hotel de Soubise on Rue des Francs-Bourgeois ( the Museum of French History can be found here)
- you’ll also be able to visit three small gardens – Jardin d’Assy, Jardin Fontenay and Jardin Jaucourt (“jardin” translates to “garden”)
- don’t forget the larger garden – Jardin de Rohan
French Archives Hours:
- summer – 8:00am to 7:00pm
- winter – 8:00am to 5:00pm

03/06/12 by Paris-Travel | Website | Comments Off on What are the plus size clothing sizes in Paris?
Chatelle visited my site and wanted to know, “What are the plus size clothing sizes in Paris?”
Many people don’t realise it’s possible to find fabulous plus size clothing sizes while they’re visiting Paris, so I created a couple of pages to help them with their shopping – here’s one question I received:
Teena
I am so excited to find your website. I will be on a 5-day tour in Paris (with some free time) and I think this website is going to ‘fit’. I plan on sharing with the others from my group. We don’t go until June, 2013 – but it’s never to early to begin.
Question: I wear a size 20 – 22, so what would be the ‘size’ I look for in Paris?
I’ll probably have many questions between now and 2013!
Chatelle
Above: spring and autumn plus size fashions from a variety of French fashion designers in Paris
It is lovely to hear from you Chatelle, and I do hope you signed up for my Newsletter … because you forgot to provide an email name for me to reply to you :-) My answer was:
Chatelle, Thanks so much for dropping by my website, and I’m so pleased you’re enjoying it.
I see you’ll be in Paris in June next year, which is when I’m usually there, so it would be fun to connect.
I have a clothing size chart on my website, which shows that Aussie size 20-22 is about 46-48 in European sizes – you can see more here:
When both Australia and France no longer have COVID restrictions, I’ll be hosting my Plus Size Paris Shopping Tours in the Parisian summers – if that’s something you might be interested in:
I have answered lots of Q&A’s (Questions & Answers) about Plus Size Paris, which I share to folks who sign up on the link above.
You may also be interested in the Postcards From Paris newsletter for this website, so if you haven’t signed up for that you might like to do so here:
In the Newsletter I answer questions from folks just like you :-)
Enjoy your planning – what fun!!
Cheers
Teena
Does this answer YOUR plus size clothing sizes question?
I hope so, if not, let me know and I’ll see how else I can help :-)

A long time subscriber of mine, Charles sends his fabulous photos of Paris
The photos of Paris on this page have been taken by Charles on his trips to Paris, and he’s happy to share them with you – aren’t we the lucky ones!
Charles says:
“Teena, Are you familiar with the Rue Cremieux? It’s a little street with a row of painted houses that seems like it should be more in the countryside than in downtown Paris. Very charming and not mentioned in many tourist books. I stumbled upon it one day when I was staying in a nearby hotel. It’s very close to the Gare de Lyon.”
Charles, I’ll be visiting this gorgeous Paris street in June 2012 – I can’t wait to see it in person, and want to thank you for the lovely tip!
In the photo above, you can see the brightly coloured homes which line rue Cremieux. Below you can see two examples:
Above: isn’t this gorgeous, with the tree and flowering branches painted on?
Above: isn’t this lilac house divine? Look at the bird near the top left of the front door – the detail is wonderful!
Below: two more of Charles’ marvellous photos of Paris.

01/05/12 by Paris-Travel | Books about Paris | Comments Off on Books about Paris I can recommend
I’ve just read these books about Paris which I’m happy to recommend to you
Some of these books about Paris I’ve received as gifts, others I’ve bought for myself, and here’s my quick overview on each of them (in no particular order).
TimeOut’s Shortlist Paris 2012
I love these books – I’ve been reading them the past few years and they’re up to date and always chock full of great new places, things to do, restaurants to try etc.
I bought this book in Sydney recently and paid $A21.95 in a book store; you can get it on Amazon for about $10, delivered to your door.
View the book on Amazon >>
Eyewitness Travel’s 15-Minute French
This is a great little book to pop in your bag, read on the train, bus, metro, whenever you want to learn a few quick new phrases. Each section has a ‘theme’ with a review at the end of each section, so you can easily follow along with this on a daily basis. Your French will improve really quick, and the phoenetic pronunciation is a breeze to read, duplicate and mimic.
This one I paid $A19.95 in a local book shop about a year ago.
View the book on Amazon >>
Australian author Sarah Turnbull’s “Almost French”
Sarah’s story is about how she accidentally fell in love and stayed in Paris, and describes the people, places, customs etc to a “T”. I’ve read this one several times of the years, and I must say each time I read it I either learn something new or I am affected by it in a totally different way, or have a different understanding of it. I thoroughly enjoyed it again, as it very closely resembles how I came to live in Paris the first time, and some of the adventures and challenges I had. Highly recommended.
I paid $A22.95 in a bookshop for this one, and I’ve just seen it on Amazon for $US12.00.

Just so you know …
My website about Paris is a labour of love, and sometimes I recommend things for which I receive a very small commission (sometimes 20c, 50c, $1), like the books on this page. These small commissions help me pay for the hosting and upkeep of the site, so if you buy something, I’d like to send you a big warm hearty “thank you” hug!
Got books about Paris you’d like to recommend?
I hope you’ve enjoyed these recommendations – would you like to share any books about Paris you’ve read and enjoyed? Please do! If you’d like to know about Paris book stores, I have some information on those too, and a page called Books About Paris France.

A Year in Paris, month by month!
I’ve created a fabulous page for my Postcards from Paris Subscribersto print out, and I had so much fun preparing it! It’s in PDF (Portable Document Format) which means that everyone with a computer can view it, and it’s attached to the Newsletter email.
Read the Paris Calendar online
The first page is a list of all the months of the year showing the major events in Paris.
You’ll be able to print this out and take it with you on your trip.
The second page is a list of all the internet links for the events – which will be clickable when opened on your computer device or smart-phone, to take you straight to the info you’d like to read.
If you’re one of my subscribers and you don’t have Adobe Acrobat installed to be able to view the document, pop over to http://Adobe.com and download – it’s a freebie :-) |

Exploring Paris 75001
I’ve heard it said that LA DROGUERIE is the absolute best, quintessentially French craft boutique in Paris … and that I must visit it.
I’ve just added La Drogeurie to my TO DO LIST for next June/July and I’m so excited at the prospect – it sounds divine!
I have read that a visit to this ex-butcher’s shop will delight the eyes and stimulate the senses. Opened in the 1970s, this is the one spot where those who sew and create love to come visit. From seamstresses, to tailors, designers, crafts people alike, they can browse buttons and bows, ribbons, threads in a massive array of colours, wool and knitting needles, and everything inbetween, all beautifully displayed in glass jars on row upon row of well-stained wooden shelves.
Oh gosh just reading about this makes me want to BE THERE RIGHT NOW :-)
Oh dear … I just visited the website and it looks like it’s now a craft store for baby clothing :-(

12/11/11 by Paris-Travel | How do I say that in French | Comments Off on How do I say that in French?
Have you ever asked, “How do I say that in French?”
"Moulin Rouge" means "Red Mill" in English
If you have, you’re not alone :-)
Many people would love to speak French, especially if they are about to visit France, or my favourite city – Paris.
I’ve created a few pages on my site already with questions written in French and even accompanied by videos, helping folks to order tea and coffee, with simple French phrases.
(PS – the “Moulin Rouge” means “Red Mill” in English, and is located in Paris.)
Now I’m going to start creating new informati0n for you, called:
“How do I say that in French?”
I’ll create a new page for each French word or phrase, and then I’ll add them to this page here to make it easy to find them.
If you have any requests, let me know! Type in the Comments below, and I’ll add your word or phrase to my list. I’m looking forward to helping you answer that question – “How do I say that in French?”!
