Arc de Triomphe Paris

The Arc de Triomphe, Paris. Just typing its name gives me shivers up and down my spine – as one of the fabulous Parisian monuments, this is at the top of my list with the Eiffel Tower and Sacre Coeur.

Driving through Paris, whether in a bus or car, you can’t help but look upon this incredible monument with awe.

I love the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France

This wonderful piece of architecture was commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte in honour of his Grande Armée and their successes.

The Arc de Triomphe :

  • was commissioned in 1806
  • completed in 1836 (yes, 30 years later!)

Unfortunately for Bonaparte, his legendary success in battles came to an end at Waterloo in 1815.

The Arc de Triomphe became a monument for all soldiers, and today you’ll find the eternal flame burning brightly under the monument for the Unknown Soldier.

The Arc is in the centre of one of the busiest traffic round-abouts in France, and should not be ventured into by less than warrior-like drivers with great fortitude. The Place Charles de Gaulle is a whirling dervish of French drivers hurtling around at break-neck speed – not for the squeamish or weak of stomach.

But don’t despair! You can reach the Arc by going underground! There are plenty of entrances to passages which lead from the edge of the Place – simply buy a ticket and head into the passages.

You’ll get an absolutely amazing panoramic view if you climb the 284 stairs (that’s the only way up) – you’ll be 50 metres/164 feet above street level, and can look down the length of so many amazing avenues. The view at dusk is spectacular, as the lights of the city start to come on, and you’ll be able to take great photos during the day.

After a spectacular dusk, head back down the stairs and through one of the passages back to a lovely wine bar, café or restaurant to bask in the knowledge of history, perhaps even a sense of accomplishment. I hope you enjoy it – I always do :-)
