On this Paris city map you can see how the city is roughly circular.

The suburbs of Paris are called arrondissements in French, and are also known as districts.

The first district – or premiere arrondissement – is the number 1 you can see in the centre of the map. The word premiere means ‘first’ and is written as 1ere or 1e.

All the other districts follow in a circular motion starting at number 1, then moving above the river Seine [the blue line in the bottom half of the image], and coil around to the right, with the 5th, 6th and 7th districts below the river.

Understanding Paris City Map Postcodes

The postcode for each arrondissement is easy to remember – 75001 for the 1st, 75002 for the 2nd, etc, so if you are visiting someone they might say to you, “I live in the 15th,” and you will know that their address ends with Paris 75015.

Paris street map

Map of Paris : Plan de Paris5My suggestion for the best Paris street map is to buy a Plan de Paris, a little street directory and map of Paris which fits in your pocket or handbag.

In the back of the Plan de Paris is a large fold-out map of Paris France – you certainly won’t get lost once you buy one of these.

I bought one of these on my first visit to Paris many moons ago, and it was (and still is) the best street map of Paris I ever used.

Depending on your eyesight, you might need to also buy a little magnifier page to read the street names.

Idea for your Paris France map

A suggestion I have for you is to also print out a Paris France map which will fit in your Travel Journal – cut it down the middle if you have to, and stick half on each page of the book.  Now you can jot down the places you really want to visit on the pages near the arrondissements, and this will be an easy visual aid for you.  It might even be faster to find points of interest than from a tourist map.

Have fun finding your way around Paris!
