How to get a Visa for Australian to work in Paris?

Moving to Paris – lucky possum!

Hi there,

My husband has been offered a job in Paris, which is great. He has an Australian and a British passport, so he will work under his British passport, as an EU member. I however, hold only an Australian passport.

Does the fact I am married to an EU passport holder mean I qualify to work in Paris too? And if so, what visa do I need, if any? Unlike my husband, I will have to look for a job once we get over there and do not have one lined up in advance.

Any up-to-date advice or information would really be appreciated!

Thanks,
Karen

Hi there Karen,

How exciting! Lucky you :-)

The first thing I’d do is contact the British Embassy here in Australia, tell them about your husband’s EU passport, and ask them what needs to be done to enable you to work in Europe.

As you’re already married to the holder of an EU passport, this should be fairly easy. I don’t know the details of how long this might take, so if you contact them asap you’ll be able to get the ball rolling.

It may depend on how long you’ve been married, it may depend on many things, so your best bet is to contact them first. They’ll be able to provide the most up-to-date info, and depending on when you leave Australia, you may even be able to get it organised before you go.

So that’s your homework for this week :-)

If you’d like to write back and let me know what you find out, I’ll be more than happy to post it on my website.

To look for jobs in Paris, pop over to http://paris.en.craigslist.org

Check out the jobs, apartments, all kinds of good stuff :-)

Tip : Paris’ postcode is 75000, so for the main 20 suburbs of Paris called quartiers or arrondissements, look for postcodes in the range of 75000 to 75020. If a job has a postcode outside that range, it means it’s outside the main map of Paris.

I do hope this helps, and that you manage to get your EU passport very quickly.

PS – I’ll be in Paris for the month of June, so if you’re there then, I’d be happy to meet up for a coffee.

Ciao for now,
Teena Hughes
